Impeachment Investigation Referendum Question
May Be On November Ballot in WI Rapids
September 13, 2006

the article in the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune
On November 7th WI Rapids citizens may be able
to vote whether they think impeachment investigations should be
started against President Bush and Vice President Cheney. They would
be joining nearly 1 million other citizens across the U.S. who will
be voting that day on impeachment.
Monday, September 11, 2006, the Wood County Impeachment
Coalition turned in nearly 950 signatures of Rapids citizens asking
the city to place an impeachment investigation referendum on the
November 7th ballot. The referendum states: "Resolved: The
U.S. House of Representatives should start an impeachment investigation
against President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard Cheney
now.” Voters will then vote yes or no to adopt the resolution.
“If adopted, it will be sent to the WI Congressional delegation,
the Congressional leadership and to the president and vice president,”
said Robert Hoch, petition drive leader.
City Clerk Vernon Borth has reviewed the names
and determined the petition is valid with more than the 896 signatures
required by state law. If the referendum issue is placed on the
Tuesday, September 19th, city council agenda, the council can either
vote to endorse the resolution or place the resolution on the November
ballot as a referendum.
Hoch explained, “In our letter to the city
we asked the council to not vote on the resolution. The citizens
who signed the petition want voters to have the right to vote on
the issue. So we asked the council to place the referendum question
on the ballot.” If the council takes action Tuesday, the impeachment
referendum will be on the November ballot. If the decision is delayed,
then the referendum would be delayed until the spring election unless
the council calls a special meeting.
William Dolan of WI Rapids helped collect many
of the signatures over the past 6 weeks. He said, “When we
went door to door, about half the people were not home. Of those
we spoke with half or more signed the petition. Some of those who
didn’t sign the petition said they don’t know enough
about politics, were fearful of repercussions or are supporters
of President Bush. Most people know within about 10 or 15 seconds
whether they want to sign.”
Pittsville, WI a city of about 900 people was
the first WI city to put the impeachment investigation referendum
on the ballot. The Wood County Impeachment Coalition completed that
petition drive a number of weeks ago.
Buzz Davis, of Stoughton, WI, Co-Chair of the
WI Impeachment/Bring Our Troops Home Coalition, said, “If
Rapids places the impeachment question on the November ballot, it
will join at least five other communities in voting whether the
impeachment process should be started against the president. Over
1 million people, minus the kids, will be eligible to vote on impeachment
in San Francisco and Berkeley, California, Champaign and Urbana,
Illinois and Pittsville and WI Rapids. This will be the largest
vote for or against impeachment in our nation’s history.”
Davis explained that people feel the Middle East
wars and the impeachment issue are crises which candidates and the
public should be discussing this election season. “But many
politicians are scared of such discussions. By placing these referendum
questions on the ballots, citizens can voice their views on the
most important issues our nation faces. Politicians and the public
across WI and the nation will be watching what nearly 1 million
people have to say on impeachment.”
Coalition leader Hoch said, “We need to
live under the rule of law. Illegal wars of aggression, torture
and wiretapping of Americans are serious violations of international
law, our laws and our Constitution.” The Coalition is planning
to conduct a public information campaign between now and the election
to help voters think through the impeachment issue.

Great NEWS:
Marty Preston and her friends in Lake Delton
collected 107 signatures for their troops home petition drive as
of last Thurs. Marty turn the lists into the city clerk and the
issue will soon come before the city council. When it does Marty
said she will ask the council to NOT take a vote on the resolution
itself but instead place the resolution on the Nov. ballot.
Bravo for citizens efforts to change the way America is doing it
political business.
AND THANK YOU MS MARTY PRESTON FOR HAVING THE COURAGE TO PUT ACTION
BEHIND CONVICTION!!!!!!!!!!!
Wauwatosa Campaign Achieves Goal
Referendum to Bring the Troops Home
Congratulations!
in Wauwatosa this November.
Congratulations also to Racine, Glendale, Fox
Point, Milwaukee and South Milwaukee - all of whom have succeeded
in getting referendums on their November ballot.
Thank you to all of our tremendous volunteers
! Your hard work and dedication has been most inspiring.
We still need to make sure we have at least 10-15%
over the required number, in case some are disqualified. Be sure
to turn in any petition sheets at the library.
If you haven't signed the petition already, please
come to the Tosa public library and do so before it's too late -
and send your friends and neighbors there, too. We'll be collecting
petitions and signatures up until 4pm Tuesday, August 1st.
Thank you for your support,
